Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, is expected to release his highly anticipated first encyclical soon—reportedly titled Magnifica Humanitas ("Magnificent Humanity") and currently in its final stage of revision. The stakes could not be higher. Amid the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence has introduced into the world, the Pope is expected to address directly the ethical questions AI poses and "the profound consequences it may have for human work, social relations, and the dignity of the person."
In the first hours and days after publication, the world will be ablaze with commentary. That is why we have assembled a group of knowledgeable, thoughtful Catholics to offer their interpretation—to help cut through the noise and engage in a deeper conversation than you will find in the news or on social media.
The exact release date remains unknown, but May 15 is a strong possibility: it was the date on which Pope Leo XIII published his groundbreaking Rerum Novarum in 1891. Pope Leo XIV, whose choice of papal name signals his intent to continue in his predecessor's spirit, has spent over a year preparing this document—which may prove the most significant of his pontificate, at a moment when the world is in desperate need of moral leadership.
